Overcoming Self-Indulgence is making sure that you have the right priorities. Nothing can satisfy you like God can.  We are made to crave God rather than food or things.

Angelina Jolie cites the cry of a generation when she says, “Anything that feels good couldn’t possibly be bad.” ¹

Do you agree with Angelina? This is the way many choose to live today.

But if we live by what “feels good” at the time, this can lead to a never-ending cycle of trying to gratify insatiable wants.  You will never be satisfied by the red shoes that you charged, or the cheese cake you stuffed into your mouth when you were too full. You can never get enough of romance novels or love-affairs. Smoking won’t bring you peace.

These are all addictions that we women turn to – but NOTHING truly satisfies other than God.

The sands of time slip through our fingers too quickly to waste precious time on temporal things that never really satisfy. What if we invested the moments of our days in things that matter for eternity?

Elizabeth Dole, a former Secretary of Transportation and presidential candidate, called for a stewardship of life when she said, “Life is not just a few years to spend on self-indulgence and career advancement. It is a privilege, a responsibility, and a stewardship to be lived according to a much higher calling.” ²

Life is a privilege. Healthy self-control will help us live longer and enjoy life. We are stewards of our bodies. We are stewards of our time.

Let’s invest our time, talent, and treasure in lasting endeavors. It is foolish to live life for momentary indulgences; it is wise to make the most of every opportunity to fulfill His great and awesome call.
