15 Things to Give Up in the New Year

As we move into 2017, here are 15 Things to Give Up in the New Year.  If you give up these 15 things you will experience more joy and fulfillment than every before.  Take time to prayerfully reflect on letting these 15 things go forever. Here’s a guide to help you take a spiritual retreat for the New Year.  Click Here to Download

Things to Give up

1. Doubting yourself

To doubt is to plummet into a sea of uncertainty where you lack conviction. If you allow this uncertainty to grow it will cause you to hold back, to hesitate and procrastinate.  Doubting will paralyze you and keep you from obtaining the fullness of your destiny. Your indecision will cause you to lack the confidence that you need to move forward into the New Year in faith.

2. Negative Thinking
A Pessimistic view will skew reality and put you in a bad mood. If you change your thinking you will change your world view. If you have a gloomy attitude heading into 2017, you will not be able to accomplish much. Negativity steals the joy out of life. As you go into the new year think on these things:

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8 NLT.

When you think on the positive of your identity in Christ your future will open up to you.

3. Fear of Failure

The Fear of Failure can sabotage your success. Fear is an unpleasant emotion that causes worry and anxiety. You begin to feel uneasy about your future. Let go of the fear of failure and ask for help. Embrace the fact that everyone makes mistakes. Be at peace with yourself and stop trying so hard. Do not let the fear of failure control whether you say “yes” or “no.” Joyce Meyer says, “Just because you feel fear doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Do it afraid”

4. Destructive Relationships

As you go into the New Year do not allow destructive relationships to control you. When you experience daily injury from another person through violent behavior you need to be safe from harm. Hostile relationships do not help you walk in peace. It’s important not to let go of our covenant relationships easily. Conflict can be an opportunity for greater intimacy. However, when a relationship has become detrimental to your health and well-being it is important to put up healthy boundaries.

5. Gossiping

Repeating rumors starts wars. Idol gossip assassinates someones reputation. Unfounded slander divides relationships. Gossip is destructive to you and your relationships.

Proverbs 16:28  says, A troublemaker plants seeds of strife;gossip separates the best of friends.

Giving up gossip is also determining in your heart that you won’t listen to slander about someone else.

6. Criticizing yourself and others

Gossip quickly leads to criticizing others in your mind and attitude. When you are constantly finding fault with another person you are no longer able to see or perceive clearly.

“Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends. It’s God’s Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You’re supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others?” James 4:11 MSG

When you put a stop to your critical attitude towards others, remember not to be critical or disapproving of yourself. Give yourself a break. Be gracious in how you think about yourself.

7. Anger

Anger can be a smoldering wick of quiet condemnation or it can be a violent outburst of wrath. Either way, when you have uncontrolled anger in your life it is like opening the door to a thief and inviting him to come in and take over.

“And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.” Ephesians 4:26-27 NLT.

Overcome your anger with God’s love. Forgive others and be free of all hostility.

8. Comfort Eating

In 2017 its time to let go of comfort eating. The next time you are tired, angry or stressed notice what you do. Do you find yourself looking in the pantry trying to find something to eat? Do you stop by a convenience store to buy your favorite snack? Do you think in your mind, “I deserve this because of my hard day?”  It’s time to let go of habits that are self-destructive.

9. Laziness

If you are unwilling to work or use energy, you may be struggling with laziness. You may not know it because you have been lying on the couch watching re-runs too unmotivated to get up and do something productive. Remember those things that fire up your passion. Begin to focus your mind and heart on your God-given destiny and shake off any laziness.

10. Negative Self-Talk

When I was pregnant with my first daughter I was unprepared for how hard pregnancy would be. I found myself waddling around frustrated. Out of my mouth came these words, “I hate life.”What a terrible thing to say when you are pregnant and carrying life.

The enemy of our souls constantly belittles. If you are not careful you will mimic the enemy’s negative words. What are those words or phrases that you find yourself saying over and over in your mind that then it spills out your mouth?

  • I ALWAYS blow it
  • I can’t do anything right.
  • No one really likes me anyway.

Let go of these destructive words and begin to make positive confessions about your future and hope.

11. Procrastination

If you constantly delay or postpone what you know you should do, you are just creating strife in your life. Procrastination robs your potential. Don’t be denied what God is calling you to do.  Take advantage of the positive momentum of the New Year to focus on what is really important to you. As you focus on your priorities it will help you take one step forward at a time. You can do it!

12 Fear of Success

Your feelings of anxiety can get mixed up with your true desire to succeed in life. You may fear that you may be unable to cope with the responsibilities of success. You may be anxious that others will reject you. Or you may dread becoming someone else. The fear of success is debilitating. You were made for success.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 NLT.

You have been created for a purpose. Success in God’s eyes is doing the good things that He prepared for you. His grace is sufficient for all that He has called you to do.

13. Anything Excessive

God has made all things for us to enjoy. However, anytime that we over-indulge in  good things it is destructive. In 2014 it is time to give up the excessive lifestyle of over-shopping, over-eating, over-indulging and to walk in self-control. Self control is a godly virtue that more of us need to embrace. His divine enablement helps us to quit addictive behaviors.

14. People Pleasing

You will sink your own ship if you trying to get everyone on board. In order for you to be the original creation of God, you have to accept that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. You won’t be able to please everyone all of the time.  So in 2014 become a God-pleaser rather than a man-pleaser.

15. Fear of Future
Here we are at the intersection of time. If you blink, your present becomes your future. When you fear your future you welcome death. None of us are able to live in the past or stay in the present. Our lives are always moving forward with the greater cosmic picture of the universe.

The best way to let go of your fear of the future is to trust the ONE who holds your future. Trust in God who will never disappoint. That doesn’t mean that your life won’t at times be disappointing. It means rather that God is bigger the menial minutia of each day. His perspective ALWAYS bring life, hope and peace.

2017 is a Year of Open Doors

God’s perspective welcomes and even yearns for the future. The world we live in is wasting away, but the future shines brightly in eternity. Get your copy of 21 Days to Spiritual Breakthrough now! Click Here to Download

Fear is a Thief

Fear is a Thief

Fear steals our freedom. It runs away with our hope. Fear makes me obsess about myself and all my limitations. Fear keeps us from connecting in community. It keeps us from taking the risks we need to take to obey God. Fear keeps me from totally trusting God. It keeps me from living in this moment and fully enjoying life.

Fear is a Thief

Jesus knew that fear would be deadly in our lives. While Jesus was on earth, he gave us 125 imperatives or commands in Scripture. Of those 125 — 21 of them deal with the topic of fear. Jesus said things like:

Have courage

Don’t be afraid

Take heart

Jesus continued to encourage his disciples to not be afraid and to follow him completely.

How do we combat fear?

We combat fear by putting it in the right perspective. You and I don’t actually have a fear-problem… we have is a faith-problem. Our goal should not be to have a “fear-free life.” In fact if that is your goal you will almost always be disappointed. You will never have a fear free life. God is not the means of “fear avoidance”

We overcome fear with faith. We stop allowing fear to steal from us. The focus should not be on how to fear less, but how to trust God more. The Holy Spirit often brings peace to us as we read and meditate on Scripture.

I love this passage:

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—

where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—

    he who watches over you will not slumber;

Psalm 121 (NIV)

The phrase “lift my eyes to the hills” is a Hebraic thought for focusing our attention on the maker of heaven and earth. One of our biggest human freedoms is the ability to choose what I am going to pay attention to and what I am not.

I can focus on my problems…

I can focus on my relationship that may go sideways…

I can focus on my financial issue…

I can focus on that person from work who is trying to take me down…

I can focus on the problems my kids are going through…

I can focus on all the things that make me afraid…

OR

I can choose to focus on God

I can focus on how He has been faithful to me in the past

We All Need Encouragement

Encouragement In the morning I will send you something. It might be a verse or a quote — something to encourage you.  Just text the word ENCOURAGEMENT to the number 33444.

We need something every once in a while that will focus us and give us encouragement

Read again Psalm 121:1-2 again…

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—

where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

HE’S THE MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH! We overcome fear when we understand that God is in control. We can’t manipulate our way into our destiny. We need to trust God completely,

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NLT)

Notice it does not say …” the plans that YOU have for YOU.” It may be hard for you to realize, His purpose is to prosper you and to give you a future and a hope.

So Don’t Let Fear Steal from You

I pray that you will rest in the fact that the God of the Universe still reigns on high. Whatever difficult thing you are experiencing, He is still bigger. His purpose for your life will prevail as you learn to trust Him more!

Overcome Your Fear with Faith #FearlessFaith

Overcome Your Fear with Faith

If you want to learn about prayer you gotta have faith. You have to believe that as a result of your prayers that God will reward you when purposefully pursue Him. You will be able to overcome your fear with faith.

Overcome Fear with Faith

“And it is impossible to please God without faith.

Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists

and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

Hebrews 11:6 NLT

To be diligent is to actively and energetically chase after God. It’s not as though He is hiding from you. It’s similar to when you were little and played hide-and-seek with your father. He wasn’t really hiding when He stood behind the tree. He was anticipating that you would find him.

God wants you to find Him. He longs to be discovered for who He truly is. He created us with a capacity to be intimate. To actively pursue God through prayer fulfills our own longing in the soul of desiring to know and be known. There is no one who knows us better than the ONE who created us and established a purpose for our lives.

If we don’t replace fear with faith, we will be led down the dangerous path of unbelief and disobedience. Unbelief accuses God at His very essence. It puts God on trial to prove Himself while denying the undeniable evidence all around.

To engage in prayer is to declare war on the demonic forces of fear that accuse God. These accusations can come as subtle thoughts against the power of God. Fear will manifest as insecurity, concern, despair, doubt dread, horror, panic, agitation, unease, fright, and terror.

Many of us do not fulfill the call of God on our lives because we are shackled by fear. Every time we try to move forward, the devil uses fear to try to stop us.

Replacing Fear with Faith

Replacing fear with faith in your prayer life requires more than just knowing that you should do it. Most Christians that I know have a general sense that fear is from the enemy and that faith if from God. ….

Four reasons that you and I do not overcome fear with faith 100 % of the time:

1. We do not pray with faith and focus.

2. We are unaware of the strategies of the enemy

3. We do not walk with a faith-filled mindset

4. We do not walk in a faith-filled Life-Style

All of us have promises from heaven that are not yet fulfilled. Some of the reason for this has to do with timing or season of life. Yet much of our under-developed potential has to do with overcoming obstacles and walking in faith.

Faith Unlocks Destiny #FearlessFaith

Faith Unlocks Destiny

Faith fueled the desire to run in a sickly, poor black girl with braces on her legs from polio. “I’m tired of being sick” she told her doctor who had treated her for scarlet fever, whooping cough, measles and chicken pox. Every morning she got up and put on the cold braces on her legs, but her heart was warmed with faith. She had fight in her spirit. Her name was Wilma Rudolph who in 1960 became the first American woman to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.

Faith Unlocks Destiny

How does a a crippled girl fight through sickness, poverty, and racism to achieve her dreams?– FAITH!

Every God-sized dream requires faith to open the door.  What God-sized dream do you have in your life that needs to be unlocked by faith?

Faith is believing in the power of God to prevail in your life situation. Faith is a confident belief and hope and fuels consistency and determination.

To have faith is to believe in the power of God to change the universe through the simplicity and mystery of walking with God.

Faith courageously moves forward convinced that God is all knowing, all powerful, and always present. Faith is fearless reliance on the God of the universe to be personally involved in the daily details of life.

If you want to succeed in life, you gotta have faith. You have to believe that as a result of your prayers that God will reward you when purposefully pursue Him:

“And it is impossible to please God without faith.

Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists

and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”

To actively pursue God through prayer fulfills our own longing in the soul of desiring to know and be known. There is no one who knows us better than the ONE who created us and established a purpose for our lives. He is the ONE who impregnates you with vision for your destiny in life. But only you can carry his dream to fulfillment. You have to put your faith into action.

Putting Faith into Action

When Wilma Rudolph began to run, she was putting her faith into action. She became fearless in her resolve to pursue her dream. She had no promises that she would succeed, but her legs became stronger with each length that she ran.

You put your faith into action every time you overcome your fears…

…fears of failure

…fears of the unknown

…fears of humiliation

…fears of rejection

…fears of pain

I don’t know what your list of fears are — but I know that if you are human, you have struggled with fear. Fear is a common foe to all of us. It chases us down in the middle of the night. It accuses us and assaults us by parading our imperfection before us. Fear shows us the difficult climb ahead. Fear takes facts and twists them till they become exaggerated in our minds.

5 Steps to Entering your “Promised Land”

This is a year to overcome every obstacle. To believe God that you are able to enter His promised land. To look forward to the future.

Promised Land

God has designed you in such a way that you have passion in areas of your purpose.  Why is it that so many fall short of entering into God’s promises life? Perhaps a better question for you to ask today is – why don’t I enter into my promises?

Let’s look at 5 Steps to receiving your inheritance in Christ.

Step 1: Have faith in God’s promise.

Poised for Promise, the Israelites missed their opportunity to enter into God’s promises because they didn’t have faith. For 40 years they marched around in the wilderness before they died. They never entered into the promise that God had for them. It wasn’t that they were just dreaming about promises that didn’t really exist. They could have entered into their promise in 11 days which was the amount of time it took to walk there from Egypt. Why did they miss out on the land of “milk and honey.”

Hebrews 4:2 talks about the Israelites when it  says, “…but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not mixed with faith …”

You must believe what God has promised and not waver in unbelief. Unbelief was deadly for the Israelites. Literally, unbelief and disobedience led to them dropping dead in the wilderness. (See Hebrews 3:18.)

Step 2: Have certainty in God’s power

In order to receive God’s promise in your life, you must be certain in His power.  God’s promises for us, corporately and individually, have been prepared and waiting for all who believe and are certain they will receive, because the same God who promised is powerful enough to fulfill His promise. He just wants you and I to enter into His great adventure. He is the one who will miraculously part your Red Sea and cause you to walk in on dry ground.

Step 3: Have trust in God’s wisdom.

You will receive His promise only when you begin to trust His wisdom that He knows what is best for you. You must come into agreement with His plan and His purpose for your life and trust in His timing. God will not only give you a promise, He will also give you the wise strategy of how to accomplish it in His strength.

Step 4: Have confidence in God’s goodness.

God is good! You must lean into God with absolute trust and confidence that what He has for you in life is good. If God is just hanging a promise out like the proverbial carrot, leading you on a wild goose chase, then that would be torture. You will enjoy what God has for you. The dream that God has for your life is connected with His Global dream of redeeming humanity.

Step 5: Have boldness to enter God’s provision.

To enter into the promised land requires risk. You have to leave what is familiar to you in order to enter the new place God has for you. Until you take the leap of faith, you won’t see the fullness of God’s promise. So be bold and strong and leap into God’s redemptive plan for your life!

Making it Practical

One Day at a Time – #HealingRain

Living One Day at a Time requires Faith

Are you weighed down by the cares of life?

I don’t know what heartbreaking situation you may be facing within your family. Your child may be diagnosed with autism. You may be dealing with a rebellious child. You may have someone you love fighting cancer. You may be in a difficult time in your marriage or going through a bitter divorce. You may be a single mom fighting to have enough time with your child.

No matter what you are going through, there is enough grace for today! So take it one day at a time. Listen to todays Healing Rain Broadcast.

Living in Freedom One Day at a Time

Living life free from fear and worry means that we trust God for every breath we take.

Beginning our day remembering all that God has done in our lives will lift your spirit and your hopes. He is alive in us. Nothing can take His place. He is all we need. His love has set us free!

Take a moment, to worship, clap your hands and maybe even dance when you listen to “Alive” by Hillsong

Does that Song Make you Want to Dance?

There are times when we are going through tough times, that we need to just stomp our feet, clap our hands, and move to the beat. The enemy of our souls hates worship because it makes us look up and see how BIG OUR GOD IS and how small our problem is in comparison.

In the midst of the darkest night, HIS light shines through. If we begin to live so that His will can be done in and through us every single day, we will live a life filled with freedom and joy.

Encouragement for your Marriage

9 Traits of a Life-Giving Marriage I know how tough and how wonderful marriage can be. We need to take our relationships one day at a time. Childlike Faith #LifeGivingLinkup

Childlike Faith

Do you have childlike faith for what you need?

One year our daughter Angela longed to take ballet so we prayed for ballet slippers. Watch this short video about God’s provision for a child’s request:

Isn’t it amazing how God works? God answers the prayers of a childlike heart. It wasn’t a coincidence that the very next week we just happened to find ballet slippers in her exact size at a garage sale.

I love seeing faith in a child’s eyes. Of course, God would use those eyes to convince her grandma that she needed to invest in her granddaughters’ desire to dance. Today when I see my adult daughters dancing, and teaching others to dance,  I am reminded to trust God and watch Him provide through childlike faith.

Childlike Faith is for Everyday

You could smile at that sweet story and not apply the lesson to your life. But, I want to remind you that Jesus was using children as an example when he was challenging his disciples to be more childlike:

One day some parents brought their children to Jesus

so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them.

But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me.

Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs

to those who are like these children.

Mathew 19:13-14 NLT

How like Jesus to turn things around so that we could see the deeper meaning and significance. Unless we become like little children, we won’t see all that He has for us.

Childlike Faith Brings Heaven to Earth

The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who have childlike faith. I don’t know about you, but I tend to look more at the price tag of doing something great. The cost of doing something can cause me to look down, when really I should look up! I need to lift my face to Jesus with trust in my eyes. If He called me to do something, He is the One who has to provide for it.

Becoming More Childlike

Here are a few words that describe what it means to be childlike:

  • innocent
  • artless
  • guileless
  • unworldly
  • trusting
  • uninhibited
  • natural
  • spontaneous

When I read these words, I want to become more trusting, uninhibited and spontaneous in my life. I want to twirl around with a smile on my face hopeful in the future. I want to be expectant about the next wonderful thing that my Father in heaven has in mind for me.

What about you?

Do you want to be more childlike? What is holding your back? Remember, being childlike is not being childish. Childishness centers on selfishness. Childlikeness centers on expectancy.

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences…
