The Selfless Love of God

The fruit of love gives selflessly and freely. It is a good-natured love that seeks the greater good. In Scripture the Greek word agape refers to a sacrificial love, the kind demonstrated by Jesus’ death on the cross.

God’s love is not proud or rude.
It is not self-seeking or conceited.
It is not irritable or resentful.
It makes no record of wrong
but rejoices when the right thing happens.
It is a love that bears under pressure
and believes the best in others.
It is an enduring love that never fails.
paraphrased from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

As a mom, you have the incredible opportunity to show this agape love to your children as a fruit of the Holy Spirit at work in you and through you. His love casts out fear.

The love of a mother for a child is the strongest nurturing force on the planet. God formed the woman’s body to not only bring forth life but to feed her child from her own body. This is an amazing picture of how God loves us. In Isaiah 49, God is described as a nursing mom who would never forget her children.

“Yet Jerusalem says, ‘The Lord has deserted us;
the Lord has forgotten us.’
‘Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child?
Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?
But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!’”
Isaiah 49:14-15, NLT

God is like a mother who can never forget her children. A mother’s love makes a child feel safe and protected. Even though it is possible for an earthly mom to choose to reject her child, God will never reject you.

The Selfless Love of a Life-Giving Mom

A Life-Giving Mom needs to model her love for her children after God’s love for us. God’s agape love is not selfish. It does not lash out in rage. A child feels safe in God’s love. Your child is protected from hostility, bitterness, and resentment when you walk in God’s kind of love.

You can live this selfless love every day by God’s grace!
