Jesus Calls Us Deeper
God calls us to get in over our heads… Launching out into the deep requires you go deeper in your faith, hope, and trust in God.*
Launching Out into the Deep
Jesus called Peter to be his disciple on a rough day. Peter and his companions had been out all night fishing and they caught nothing. Tired, hungry, surrounded by a multitude of people, Peter tried to stretch out and clean his net so that they could go out fishing again that night. He had a lot of people depending on him as a business owner; he couldn’t afford another day without catching fish. The multitude was pressing Jesus and power was going out of Him so that everyone around was being healed (Luke 5:1-11).
Before Peter knew it, Jesus had stepped on his boat and charged him to put out a little from the land so that He could sit down and teach the crowd. Peter didn’t mind. In fact, listening to Jesus teach made the tedious work of washing nets go faster. He had heard about Jesus and he was curious to know if the message and the messenger was real.
When Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”
“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.
When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.” For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. Luke 5:4-9 NLT
When was the last time you were awestruck?
We settle into our daily lives and expect the ordinary. We clean our nets or whatever tedious task we are charged with and we seldom launch out into the deep at the command of Jesus. We need to follow these 3 instructions Jesus gives us:
1. Launch Out Deeper
Jesus is always calling us to go out of our depth. He wants us to be over-our-heads and dependent on Him. It’s not enough to launch out into the deep when we are young (and foolish), we need to launch out into the deep when we are older and understand the sacrifice. Each new season we need to be stretching, growing, and launching into deeper places with Jesus.
2. Let Down Your Nets
Our faith requires action. To let down our nets means we need to take action and obey God. He calls us to be fishers-of-men. Our calling requires us to share our faith in word, action, and dead. We need to live our live in the open and always share the reason for our faith with others.
3. Expect Miraculous Multiplication
Part of hanging out with Jesus is learning to expect the miraculous. A miracle defies human logic and reasoning. The supernatural-world breaks into our every-day-ordinary-world. Living out the Jesus-Lifestyle requires us to expect multiplication (and not just addiction). He does it all without human striving. Life with Jesus means that we enter into a multiplication reality with the power of His Spirit.
I would love to hear from you…
… What is your story of launching out into the deep in this season?
… Are you letting down your nets?
… Are you expecting miraculous multiplication?
