Launching Out Into the Deep

Launching Out Into the Deep

Sometimes, God calls us to get in over our heads… Launching out into the deep requires you go deeper in your faith, hope, and trust in God.*

Jesus Calls Us Deeper

When Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish.”

“Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.”  And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear!  A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, “Oh, Lord, please leave me—I’m such a sinful man.”  For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. Luke 5:4-9 NLT

Jesus called Peter to be his disciple on a rough day.  Peter and his companions had been out all night fishing and they caught nothing.  Tired, hungry, surrounded by a multitude of people, Peter tried to stretch out and clean his net so that they could go out fishing again that night. He had a lot of people depending on him as a business owner; he couldn’t afford another day without catching fish. The multitude was pressing Jesus and power was going out of Him so that everyone around was being healed (Luke 5:1-11).  Before Peter knew it, Jesus had stepped on his boat and charged him to put out a little from the land so that He could sit down and teach the crowd.  Peter didn’t mind. In fact, listening to Jesus teach made the tedious work of washing nets go faster.  He had heard about Jesus and he was curious to know if the message and the messenger was real.

After Jesus stopped speaking, he asked Peter to launch out to the deep and let down their nets for a catch.  This was completely ridiculous.  Peter, as a fisherman knew that the right time to fish was at night. He also knew that you caught more fish in shallow water.  Peter wanted to correct this rabbi, but he had spoken with such authority that he simply said “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net” (Luke 5:5).  It was at this point that Peter knew he was not dealing with any ordinary rabbi.  Not only did they catch fish during the day in deep waters, they caught so many fish that their net was breaking and they had to get their partners to come and help them. Both boats almost sank.  Simon Peter was so overwhelmed by the supernaturally abundant catch of fish, that he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Master, leave. I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.”(Luke 5:8 Message)

But Jesus looked deeper into Peter.  Others saw a rough, impetuous fisherman to spoke more than he thought.  They laughed and called him “Simon” which means “shifting sand” But Jesus called him “Peter” which means rock.  He saw the potential in Peter to be a great leader who would “catch” men.

Launching Out into the Deep Waters

Jesus is constantly calling us to launch out into deeper waters. He is calling you to go deeper in Him… to trust and rely on Him more. He wants to increase your impact on other people. He is going to multiply your efforts. Even if you have toiled all night, you can through your net on the other side of the boat and have a “supernatural-catch.”

4 Promises for Troubling Times

Trust in God

Hearing the first sound of gun shots, the terrified victims began to run. Shetamia Taylor, mom of four was shot by the Dallas sniper as she jumped on her 15 year old son to protect him from the shots. Lodged between a couple of cars, they lay there for 5 minutes. All Shetamia could think about was whether or not her other sons were safe. After being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, she recovered in her hospital room praying for the families of the officers who had been murdered.

The recent horrific news of the violence in Orlando and Istanbul have added to the growing concern of the American people. Our hearts are crying out against the senseless murder.

Standing Firm on God’s Promises

In times of escalating violence, we need to stand firm on the promises of God. Jesus made these 4 promises to His disciples the night before his crucifixion. His promises still hold true for us.

1. Jesus Promises Comfort

Jesus said,

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.” John 14:1-3 NLT

A troubled heart is in anguish. For many of us, as we have watched the news reports of violence we have felt concern for the families of those who have died. Jesus promises his presence. He promises to prepare a place for us eternal. His words bring comfort and hope.

2. Jesus Promises Power

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.  Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” John 14:12-14

As the church of Jesus Christ stands up in unity, we are able to accomplish the greater works that Jesus is talking about. His prayer for us is that we put aside our differences and become united.

3. Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

“If you love me, obey my commandments.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. John 14:15-17

The Holy Spirit is the one who advocates on our behalf. He advocates for the African American youth who have been targeted unfairly. The Holy Spirit leads us into truth.

4. Jesus Promises Peace

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am.  I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. John 14:27-29 NLT

The more you watch the news reports, the less peace you will experience. What you meditate on you will magnify. Jesus is hear to give you and I a gift– peace of mind and heart. The world can’t give us a gift like this — only Jesus can.

So in the wake of this violence, here are 2 things that you can do right away:

1. Trust God

You will be led by the spirit to be at the right place, at the right time, making a difference in people’s lives. Trust that God is bigger than the problems of the world. Trust God to help you forgive and let go of any bitterness you may feel.

2. Believe

Believe what Jesus has said. He has called you and me to not let our hearts be troubled… that must mean it is possible to be in the middle of troubling times and still be filled with his gift–peace of mind and heart. Believe that He has given you His authority to make a difference. Believe that He has overcome the world by the power of the cross, and so you can be an overcomer too.

I would love to hear your comments… Where were you when the shots were fired? Do you stand on these promises?

Learning to Walk in Grace

Learning to Walk in Grace

I remember my first Easter with my oldest daughter Rachel when she was 9 months old. We were having an Easter Egg hunt in our neighborhood and wouldn’t you know, it snowed that morning in Tennessee… but all of us moms, still got out there with our Easter Eggs and baskets

Learning to Walk in Grace

I can’t describe to you the joy that I felt as my 9 month old daughter Rachel was able to walk with me by holding my hand… She was still pretty unsteady… but by holding my hand she was able to reach down and pick up and egg … It was the first time that I celebrated Easter through the eyes of a child…

We were so excited about every step that Rachel took… I don’t ever remember the falls that Rachel had … She would take a few steps with her little legs and then take a tumble… But we would be going crazy…. screaming… shouting… taking picture of this momentous event of her first steps!

I don’t remember ever sitting on the couch saying…

“Come on Rachel… you can do better than that… I’m walking… why are you falling… Haven’t you mastered this yet? Your dad can walk… grandma can walk… come on! What’s wrong with you?”

NO! I never did that.

The falls never frustrated me.

I don’t remember the falls. Rachel turns 26 on May 24. She knows how to walk now (and falls a lot less).

But when she was little, there were times she took a fall and she had a bloody knee that needed bandaging… She also needed to be cuddled and held and her boo boo kissed.  Then, a bright smile would light up her face and off she would go again.

So it is with our heavenly father

who rejoices in every step you have ever taken

and heals every fall.

So it is with our heavenly father

who loves to see us run

and never tires of picking us up

In fact, God forgets (the falls). “As far as the east is from the west” (I have forgotten the falls).

Jesus is saying,

“What falls? All I see is the steps. Some of us are absolutely consumed with the falls. What falls? Trust me to help you walk again.  Just turn around from your sin and walk towards me!”

There is often something inside of us that feels like God is going to love some future version of ourselves better. It’s not true. God is not tired of picking you up. It’s about the journey, not about arriving.

You and I are never going to “deserve” God’s favor. I can’t live a perfect life. You can’t live a perfect life.

JESUS DID LIVE A PERFECT LIFE.  So when Jesus went to the cross, he could pay a moral debt that you and I could never pay. He died a spiritual death – that you and I could never die.

Living Bold for Christ

Living Bold for Christ

This morning as I was walking and praying there were 2 adolescents under the playground equipment in the park. So young, they looked like boys more than men. I walked over and asked them if they needed any help. With lighters in hand, they could just be meeting for a smoke or buying drugs or homeless.

As I talked with them more and learned their names my heart was filled with compassion. These young men have made foolish choices. I don’t know all the pain they experienced in their short lives. But my heart beat for them. I don’t want the potential that God has placed in their lives to be lit up with smoke.

I leaned in and asked if I could pray for them. One of the men flashed me a smile that lit up his face and said yes. I prayed,

“Jesus, thank you for these young men.

While they were yet in their mothers’ wombs, you knew them.

You fashioned them with your own hands.

You gave each of them a destiny that only they can fulfill.

Jesus, they have lost their way.

They have made foolish choices.

I pray that you would light their path.

Help them find their way home to you.

Surround them with divine appointments and protection.

I pray this in Jesus name. Amen.”

As I walked away, wanting to do more, but sensing that their hearts were not open to more, I continued to pray for them.

As I reflect back, I am challenged by our beautiful, pristine middle class neighborhoods that I presently am called to live in. The beautiful homes become shells that hide the desperate challenges that men, women, and children face every day.

Here I am as a woman with so much. I am desperately in love with Jesus, and he has not only saved me, He has healed me a delivered me. Every day, His word instructs me on how to live and what choices to make.  The thing that I have that can make the difference for Michael and Kyle and so many others is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ.

It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes…”

Romans 1:16 NLT

Living Bold for Christ is not based on Personality

The boldness that we walk in every day is not based on our personality. It’s source flows from the saving power of Jesus Christ.  Jesus is both bold as a lion and gentle as a lamb. Our boldness is walked out in the gentleness of letting the Holy Spirit inform how we are to minister to people that we encounter every day. God will use your unique personality to change people’s lives as you point them to Jesus.

Living Bold for Christ Releases Destiny

The destiny that is released when you live out your daily calling is not only your destiny, but the destiny of those who are trapped. Jesus came that none would perish and all would have an opportunity to know Him intimately. He came to destroy the works of the enemy in peoples’ lives. You hold in your hands the key of eternal life that unlocks destiny.

Living Bold for Christ is a Daily Choice

You and I have a choice every day if we will follow the Lord’s leading and prompting. There is enough time in the day to do all that God is calling you and I to do. Most of all, the gift is already in you. If you have received Christ as your Lord and savior, just share that gift with others in every smile that crosses your face, and every word that comes out of your mouth.

Inspirational Stories of Hope -Mercy House

Inspirational Stories of Hope:

The light of this truth captivated me this morning:

Immense in mercy

with an incredible love,

He embraced us.

His mercy and love is immeasurable and unending.

This love was beautifully shown in practical ways at last night’s benefit for Mercy House. The gathering was packed with graduates from Mercy House, senators, and ministry leaders around the city of Dallas who have seen the power of this ministry.

Mercy House empowers single women with hope, help, and a future. Watch this powerful testimony:

Mercy House wouldn’t exist with out the faith and dedication of Susan Hulet who was awakened to the cries of single pregnant women during her prayer time. She drove to her husband Pastor Eric’s office and said “We need to DO something about this.”  And they did! Sixteen years later lives have been saved because of their obedience to make hope real.

Here’s a picture of this heroic couple:

09-12-14 Susan and Eric Hulet

What Inspirational Stories of Hope will result when you say “YES” to God’s call to help the hurting, the lost, the broken?

Take God to ask how you should help. In closing, meditate on the good news of God’s immense mercy and incredible love that He has embraced you with.

He was merciful and made us ALIVE in Christ…

“It wasn’t so long ago that you were mired in that old stagnant life of sin.

You let the world, which doesn’t know the first thing about living, tell you how to live.

You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience.

We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing,

when we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat.

It’s a wonder God didn’t lose his temper and do away with the whole lot of us.

“Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, he embraced us.

He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ.

He did all this on his own, with no help from us!

Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven

in company with Jesus, our Messiah.” Ephesians 2:1-6 MSG

Sharing His Immense Mercy and Incredible Love with Others

We have been made alive in Christ, to show His love and Mercy to others. God will quicken your heart to help those in need. Showing mercy to a single pregnant woman gives her baby a chance not only to survive but thrive in life. You can make a difference.
